How To Check Oil Schedule Service

Step-by-Step Instructions for Checking Transmission Fluid

Even if you’re working by yourself in your Chesapeake garage, you can successfully check your transmission fluid without any assistance. Just follow these simple steps to get things rolling:

  1. Ensure your car is parked on level ground, and allow your engine to run for a few minutes before proceeding so your car can warm up and give you the most accurate fluid level reading.
  2. You can turn the car off after a few minutes and open the hood. Under the hood, locate the transmission fluid dipstick. It’s often found directly to the right of the oil dipstick, but you can consult your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and transfer some fluid to your finger. Rub it around and inspect the color; healthy transmission fluid should be almost clear with a pink or red hue. If it’s dirty or smells burnt, you’ll need to visit a service center for a full replacement.
  4. Wipe the fluid off the dipstick with an old rag, then insert it back into the vehicle. Remove it once more to inspect the fluid level. If the fluid line is below the “Full” marking, you’ll need to top it off with more fluid.
  5. If you’re adding more fluid, be sure to use a funnel so it pours in slowly and you don’t overfill it.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Now you know how easy it is to check your transmission fluid at home in Chesapeake, but another question probably remains: How often do you check your transmission fluid? This fluid inspection should be performed monthly, in addition to checking other fluids like the engine oil and power steering fluid. As always, it’s a good idea to check your owner’s manual as well to see how often the manufacturer recommends checking the fluid.

Quick Facts On Transmission Fluid

  • There are different types of transmission fluid for the various models on the road in Suffolk, as well as for manual transmissions and automatic transmissions. Your owner’s manual will tell you which type to get for your vehicle.
  • If your car has a manual transmission, you’ll likely need a jack to access a plug underneath the car in order to check the fluid. Often, manual drivers find that it’s quicker to get the fluid checked at a service center.
  • Does your vehicle have trouble when shifting gears? This could be caused by low transmission fluid. Check the fluid level first; if it’s correct, then you’ll want to schedule service as there could be a more serious problem.
  • Transmission fluid should be fully replaced every 50,000–100,000 miles, depending on your driving habits, transmission type, and other factors. Again, your owner’s manual should have a more precise schedule.
