Our History
Chairman Rick Hendrick and Charlotte-based Hendrick Automotive Group, one of the largest privately-held automotive retail organizations in the United States, first partnered with the owners of Colonial Chevrolet in 1994. Later re-branded Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Norfolk, the dealership is currently one of 95 dealership locations in which the company operates throughout the United States.
Becoming Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Norfolk
In 1984, Hendrick founded Hendrick Motorsports. The Concord, North Carolina race team is one of Mr. Hendrick’s lifelong passions and has garnered a NASCAR record 15 national series owner’s championships and 16, overall. Its roster of Chevrolet supported stock-car drivers includes Alex Bowman, William Byron, Chase Elliott, and seven-time Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson.
Hendrick is second on NASCAR’s all-time Cup victories list (1949-present), leads all owners in modern-era wins (1972-present) and has won at least one Cup-level race each season since 1986 – the longest active streak. He is NASCAR’s all-time leader in Cup Series owner’s championships with 12, including seven with Johnson, four with Jeff Gordon and one with Terry Labonte. In NASCAR Cup Series history, Hendrick Motorsports holds the all-time records for pole positions, top-five finishes, top-10s and laps led.
